Bubba and Kat

Yes, those are the model numbers of our friends Bubba and Kat respectively. In the year 2099 humanity had, for the most part, made a shift from rural areas to urban. Cities started growing vertically more than ever. Space was the new gold and humanity had to adapt in many ways to the changing environment. If humanity's time is shrunk to an hour, then the time since there was a rapid development in science and technology is equivalent to a minute. This short period was not enough for Humanity to match the speed of technological evolution. Humans still needed love, compassion and the warm fuzzy feeling of being with someone. With relationships becoming more fickle over the years, people started relying on pets. Pets had become like family, a partner or child. But in this crowded landscape, having a pet was a luxury, and only a few could afford to have one. Pets needed constant care, space, and food just like a human would, which gave rise to robotic pets and companions. These robotic pets mirrored real pets and were created from countless hours of data, watching and monitoring the behavior of animals. These super pets were all the rage. They needed low maintenance, were loving, caring and most of all recharged themselves on their docking stations at night. One such pet was Kat, who brought happiness and joy to an old lady Ms. Meera. Kat was manufactured by CreatureTech Industries which was the leading manufacturer of cute and cuddly pets for kids and adults. Every cybernetic pet was custom programmed. The program consisted of 3 components. One for primal behavior, second for human data and third was its past. The second component "human data" was everything that humans have done, the good and the bad. The first two components remained consistent in all the pets, and only the last element was carefully curated according to eager pet owners' tastes.

Just like CreatureTech was involved in the making of pets, CareBot Inc. was engaged in the creation of Humanoid robots. These robots were carefully crafted to serve people in need like war veterans, the old & those who needed care in hospitals and nursing homes. Carebot Industries created Bubb4 which will be referred to as Bubba throughout this story. Just like Kat Bubba's algorithm consisted of the same three components, primal behavior, human data and it's past. The significant difference between Bubba's and Kat's algorithm was how each reacted to "human data," and it's own past. Being a humanoid robot, Bubba had more processing cores to reflect on things like human behavior and history. These three components were made mandatory by the government, which made the robots aware of their surroundings and be able to deal with them.

Humanity, in general, was pretty happy with the advancement in robotics and many new laws were in place that would never let any robots hurt or cause injury to humans. Every little problem in the creation and development of robots was ironed out, but there was an event that changed everything. It so happens that while conducting deep-sea mining, an undetected tectonic plate gets hit by the mining vibrations. These vibrations set off a Tsunami that reaches one of the power plants and causes a catastrophic power failure. The backups cut off for a minute before turning back on.

This short power failure was enough to shake up one of the Carebot Industries' factories. A batch of robots, when being updated with data, gets interrupted. The upload of the component "human data" interrupts right at that time. Human data, which was a significant part of the component package halts at 8%. The first 10% of "human data" consisted of all the wrongs that humans as a race have done. This 10% of data was necessary as that formed the basis of corrections and improvements that humans made throughout history, learning from mistakes. But at 8% that particular batch of robots knew nothing about the good that humans have done. These robots only knew humans as a violent species, and its algorithm declared them dangerous, who needed termination. The batch which was part of the Mark 4 robots was declared hazardous to humans. This defective batch of robots who go, rogue, make every attempt to turn the other Mark 4 robots against humans. The Robots have an algorithm to sync with other robots and this corrupt software spreads like wildfire across all Mark 4 robots. Notifications reach all humans, and they have no option but to flee for safety. The Mark 4 robots systematically take over the Government and turn every possible robot rogue. Bubba remained unaffected as he was created before the Mark 4 robots. The Pet bots stay unaffected too. Kat who later joins Bubba in a stunning twist of events becomes one of his best friends in the journey towards reuniting with the humans that created them.
